There are many different real-time search engines that approach search in many different ways. People think that real time is just Twitter and sure enough, some of the search engines put Twitter search front and center. Few search only Twitter, though - there are only about 3 million links shared on Twitter each day.

Ro)bots (or spiders) are scripts or applications that search out information on the web. Search engines constantly scour the web for information using this method -- but bots are also used by those nasty folks on the web that like to steal your information or trash your website. Plus, there is always the trusty search engine.

So, in thinking of the practical application, one would need to study the patterns of wiki growth and development as well as the challenges. That's a start.
