This is the second part of a two-part interview with John Falk and Beverly Sheppard on their book Thriving in the Knowledge Age: New Business Models for Museums and Other Cultural Institutions. I love this idea, but I often find that museum staff are really nervous about making any changes that might alienate current members/donors.

I imagined museum folks reading the article and snapping the paper closed with smug smiles on their faces: "See. It was distaste. This is why we have to avoid Disneyfication."

It's been awhile since I've shared the progress of The Tech Virtual , the web and Second Life-based virtual exhibit workshop that The Tech Museum of Innovation opened in December of 2007. Some of these people are professional artists or exhibit designers, but most are just talented folks with an interest in museums. It's lovely.

A Community-Based Approach to Collecting and Cataloging CUL is a replicable model for community archives that accepts every piece of print media from a certain area without making quality or importance judgments, going back as far in history as possible. Why discuss gifting on Museum 2.0? One of my greatest interests is the "p articipatory museum," in which there is substantive, unfacilitated visitor-to-visitor interaction. She told me an anecdote about an experience with the Stanford Art Museum exhibition, Question , which included a keyboard where visitors could type their own thoughts about art, to be projected on a wall along with quotes by famous people. That audience--our visitors--expects that museum content has been developed with them in mind.

On June 4, we opened The Tech Virtual Test Zone , a new 2000 sq ft gallery at The Tech Museum of Innovation featuring exhibits on the theme of art, film, and music that were originally developed in Second Life by a community of creative amateurs. If we were musicians, we'd have the recordings and the sheet music. The whole process of developing an exhibition tends to get stuck behind a museum's doors. In the past two decades, science centers have been in the lead in the exhibits arena, and we think we have a lot to share--and learn--with other museums.

I hosted two sessions, one on design for participation and the other on mission-driven museum technology development. He started with museums as a "place to go"--to see things, consume experiences. Wendy has a very specific set of ground rules about how someone is supposed to approach the Love Tapes: first, by watching others to get the feel for it, then, recording their own (to background music of their choice), then, deciding whether to include it in the total collection, and finally, viewing their own tape as part of that collection.

Many museum people, when you suggest letting visitor rate content/exhibits/programs, bring up the “American Idol” argument. You can’t let people vote, they say, because it will push museum content to the lowest common denominator. Museums will become American Idol machines, putting out crap that panders to unthinking consumers.
