Going beyond content delivery, I also use a lot of participatory and hands-on learning techniques to help students gain a deeper understanding. Classroom style with desks puts a barrier between the students and the instruction, especially when people are using laptops or tablets to take notes.

Two years ago, we mounted one of our most successful participatory exhibits ever at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History: Memory Jars. There were no written instructions, just a mural that suggested what to do and labels that prompted people for their name and memory. People were spending a long time working on them.

They tend to be small community blogs that serve a set of people who already know each other and want to connect with each other, like a family, friend group, or work team.
