The Leading Change Summit was more intimate (several hundred people), participatory and interactive, intense, and stimulating. These could done by one person or could be shared if mapped out in advance. And while anything you do the first time will not be perfect and in many cases stressful, in the end it was a good experience.

As I imagined a world without Nina Simon ’s Participatory Museum , I felt sad about all the visitors whose voices (and post-it note comments) weren’t honored. Research suggests that effective social media isn’t just about shilling but instead about sharing valuable content. The work is 24/7 and the pay can be 7/11.

The other two things that happened was that I started working a lot in participatory journalism. I'm a big believer in participatory journalism, or citizen journalism, whatever you want to call it. A willingness to share information and content, also known as transparency ; planning is discussed and user participation is welcomed. Extension programs use wikis, flickr, blogs, tagging, and other tools to share information and content. Social Interaction - People can have conversations and create content together. It's messy.

While the content was highly varied in tone and style, I felt that it taught me more about how artists think about what they do than most interpretative materials. In some venues that offered maps of their hosted works, I saw visitors checking off works on their maps as they saw them--a kind of collecting behavior I never see in museums.

Looking at the board, I saw several specific, unique suggestions like: Use Google Maps to find a park(s) along the way. This is a participatory comment board in a true sense. They have eight years of archived content from this discussion board. A short break to run/swing/etc. is good for all.

Here's the basic idea: while you are at the museum, you save digitizable content--either content you make (photos of yourself) or content you collect (museum-supplied text or media of interest). It's an outpost for some cheap content, and that's immediately obvious to me when I get there. These pages often look barren.

This same process can also be applied to visitor-generated content. But if the content is laying fallow, reviewed by NO ONE, why not let visitors take up the mantle? I admit that I have often jumped directly to "embracing" in exploration of how museums can become more participatory.

There are lots of museums (and organizations of all kinds) looking for ways to inspire users and visitors to produce their own content and share it with the institution online. It launched in October of 2007 with a very simple and understandable idea: to produce a global map of pieces of art made with stones on beaches.

The NAS publishes one such report every business day, and apparently these reports are seen as a gold standard of objective, well-researched content on a range of industries and issues. Libraries are more customer-focused, museums, more content-focused. Museums provide the information that we deem useful or interesting.
