As our culture explodes in embracing creativity across the professional/amateur spectrum, museums have two choices: we can sharpen the line. and his voice getting lost in the waves. But some visitors--especially some artists--hate it. 1 is the weaker choice.

But I’d been scribbling notes for an art museum label post for awhile, and then yesterday, the NY Times had a review of a new show at MOMA, Comic Abstraction. The collection is disaggregated, grouped by floor (Painting and Sculpture 1) rather than artist, movement, time period, or geography. MOMA has standard art museum labels.

Three examples: In the late 1980s, the Brooklyn Children's Museum created an exhibit called Send a Letter to Snoopy. As Kathy McLean noted in Visitor Voices in Museum Exhibitions , while staff were afraid that typing on the typewriter would be too hard for some young children, "kids lined up to carefully and slowly type their letters."

On June 4, we opened The Tech Virtual Test Zone , a new 2000 sq ft gallery at The Tech Museum of Innovation featuring exhibits on the theme of art, film, and music that were originally developed in Second Life by a community of creative amateurs. Last week, we looked at the first section of Visitor Voices , on Talk-backs, and came to the conclusion that comment boards and the like are functionally conversations, and that their design, therefore, should focus on encouraging positive, lively, thoughtful, engaged discussion. The accompaniment is a strange one.
