This week marks five years since the book The Participatory Museum was first released. Over 150,000 people have accessed the free online version. I thought the pinnacle of participatory practice was an exhibit that could inspire collective visitor action without facilitation. Over 20,000 copies have been sold around the world.

I've now been the Director of The Museum of Art & History in Santa Cruz for two months. Her goal is nothing less than to remake the MAH as the primary cultural touchstone of the Santa Cruz community, the place that best embodies the unique cultural vibe of Santa Cruz. A practice-based artist once colorfully described art museums to me as "places where art goes to die." But these shifts come with necessary questions about how to scaffold the visitor experience in a "living" space so people understand what the heck is happening, how they can participate, and what is out-of-bounds.

There are many participatory experiences that appeal primarily to adults, and they are designed distinctly for adults. There's a huge difference between the edgy, DIY beauty of Candy Chang 's participatory urban artworks and the dayglow colors, exclamatory language , and preschool fonts of most museum interactives.
