By a strange and lucky coincidence, I was at the Experience Music Project and Science Fiction Museum (EMPSFM) in Seattle for a two-day workshop. It is apropos that the EMPSFM workshop was focused on how the museum can deepen relationships with teen audiences. Do these teens need EMPSFM to survive? Probably not.

The event was oversold, and participants raved about the experience. Everything about the event--from the time slot to the tone of the content to the music played--was designed for that audience. Performances just for teens. The experience is dramatically different from the norm and the audience is very targeted.

Every other year, they convene TUPAC, a group of 35 outside advisors, including teens, college students, Temple University professors, artists, philanthropists, and community leaders. The cuts were so deep that school music rooms are full of unplayable instruments. But it also makes their "front-end" experience incoherent.

This strategy is successful when you have an existing room with a compelling experience and a credible sense that that experience will be relevant to your audience of interest.

This week, the Denver Art Museum (DAM) opened a new temporary exhibition called The Psychedelic Experience , featuring rock posters from San Francisco in the heyday of Bill Graham and electric kool-aid. I happened to be at DAM for work and got to experience this amazing exhibit. It is an incredible museum experience.

Sure, it's social, but people stick to their own "pods"--families, teens, adults--and don't diverge or merge. But the best reason I can imagine has to do with barriers and shared experience. Out on the boardwalk, or at the zoo or a museum, there's a common experience of the sights, sounds, smells, activities of the place.

Many adults think it provides a good adult experience but that engaging with the exhibits requires waiting and or wading through lots of running, yelling kids. A museum experience I’ll always remember: In 2002, I worked at the Boston Museum of Science with a program in which high school students from a nearby charter school spent half their school time at the museum. We tried on clothes, listened to new music, and threw pennies in the fountain. But I grew up in L.A. I’m a valley girl.

When producing for/by kids, there was more of an emphasis on giving the feel of the piece—with music, stories about the artist, comments about other art the artist produced—and those context clues helped me step into the art more emotionally. There are surely other tools and methods beyond labels that could improve my art museum experience.

We're always happy for more bodies in the door, but if supporting teens means alienating seniors, there's a problem. There were thousands of people in the park for plays, free music, and beautiful scenery. Connecting with communities means making conscious decisions that invite in particular people.

He wandered around the big top playing music with his jiggered musical contraption attached to his body. If you have a teen program running, there are no second teen programs person out drumming up business. As a field, we spend a whole lot of time evaluating patron’s experiences (hopefully).

The recent flurry of restrictions that has sent teens fleeing? I want in-person museum experiences to be more like experiences on social sites like Flickr, where strangers connect and form relationships around content. All that's required is an explicit way to physically signal that you want to be part of the social experience.

A group in their late teens/early 20s were wandering through the museumwide exhibition on love. When I walked by the first time, the teens were collaging and Kyle and Stacey were talking. I don't know what formed the bridge between the artists and the teens in this circumstance. Kyle had brought his baby with him.

And so, they're able to make connections between food being grown, harvested, all the experiences of that and understanding that from an ecological perspective, from a gardening perspective, and then making that link back to making it, and eating it, and there's a relationship that begins to happen there for the children.
