This week at my museum, as we are wrapping up our current set of exhibitions on collecting, I noticed a simple, subtle example of this that I thought might interest you. One of the collections on display is a set of "found lists" collected by a local farmer, Danny Lazzarini. Our current exhibition is about why people collect things.

Our county board of supervisors had brought their official meeting to the museum. The supervisors toured the exhibition with some of the 100+ local partners who helped create it. In it, I argued that museums could give up control of the visitor experience while still maintaining (a new kind of) power.

The museum itself was well-integrated into the event. Or that visitors form a spontaneous "laugh circle" on the floor. Online to onsite migration isn't always easy.

Two weeks ago, we inaugurated a Creativity Lounge on the third floor of our museum. It's a little living room in a lobby area that invites people to lounge on comfortable chairs, leaf through magazines and books related to art and Santa Cruz history, and generally hang out. The area that houses the Creativity Lounge also shows art.

People often ask me which museums are my favorite. It's not the extent to which they are participatory. I visit lots of perfectly nice, perfectly forgettable museums. In some cases, that's based on subject matter, as at the Museum of Jurassic Technology or the American Visionary Art Museum.
