Our internships have generally gotten more structured. Community programs interns work with artists and historians, families and adults, to make everything from mini-participatory exhibitions to full-blown concert series. Sounds good? But I would be remiss if I did not say that the community programs internships are all rocking.

As artistic director Abe Burickson described their work to me, I imagined Theseus walking deeper into the labyrinth towards the Minotaur. He spoke of the audience as providing a challenge, a challenge like any other artistic constraint. The goal was to create work that is moving for her and a compelling artistic challenge for us.

Guard staff who are willing to let an artist step between two panes of glass to perform. The Walker is also a place where everyone is committed to supporting artists and new work, so every time we bring in an artist, staff are enthusiastic about the idea of coming together to create something. It's inherent in what we do.

Last month, artist and game designer Nikki Pugh led an utterly charming, often hilarious community residency at the City Gallery in Leicester, UK. I wanted the details of the residency to be shaped by the people who got involved with it, so it needed a structure with an edge that could be pushed against in different directions.

First, we realized that our museum is different from other museums, but our benefits and membership structure were the same as others. In some cases, the artist is not comfortable, or there are insurance and liability issues. It sounds like this will make lobby membership sales a lot more complicated to pitch.

Earlier this year, the New Museum and Creative Time commissioned a traveling piece by artist Jeremy Deller called "It Is What It Is: Conversations About Iraq." From my perspective, It Is What It Is was not designed with sufficient structure to robustly and consistently support dialogue. No one approached the volunteers.

Based in fact, created in the imagination" sounds lovely, but it also implies exaggeration, selective storytelling, and other risks museums are not often willing to take overtly. At the physical museum, visitors who wished to provide feedback on the skull were instructed to leave the building and walk into a temporary structure that served as both a For the Love of God gift shop and feedback environment. Unfortunately, this site doesn't live up to the hype--or the goals at hand.
