Last week, I attended Structure Lab , a half-day workshop on legal and financial structures for ventures for social good. The Structure Lab is set up as a "game" in which you explore cards in various categories (values, assets, financing, etc.) I collected some tools to use in planning and discussing a new business.

Social networking sites like MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, even ExhibitFiles are tools that allows people--strangers and friends--to connect with one another. The tools aren't inherently unsafe. By the standard set by a culture that judges MySpace as dangerous, perhaps these in-person interactions are even MORE dangerous.

Much to my mom's relief, I stayed in school but remained deeply suspicious of the artificial structure of grades and gold stars. There are many parallels between free-choice learning and participatory design. I didn't want to care what was going to be on the test. I didn't feel supported pursuing intrinsically motivated projects.

For three years, I've been using a "hierarchy of participation" diagram to talk about the ways that cultural institutions and platforms can scaffold social experiences among users.
