What does the word "participatory" mean to you? The various definitions of participatory projects can lead to confusion and misunderstandings. Participation in science research is a good basis on which to develop a framework for participatory models because it is based on a consistent scientific process with many steps.

I''ve seen this line of questioning almost completely disappear in the past two years due to many research studies and reports on the value and rise of participation, but in 2006-7, social media and participatory culture was still seen as nascent (and possibly a passing fad). Yes and no. I frankly think this is ridiculous.

Specifically, we analyze the relative social behavior of people on buses versus those on trains, and look for clues as to what design elements contribute to different kinds of participatory behavior. In my highly anecdotal research, the bus is a more social space than the train or subway. We have childhood memories of social bus rides.

We focus on people who are culturally curious, actively creative… but may not see a traditional arts institution as a place for them. culturally curious but maybe not inclined to walk into a museum. The Wikimedians asked if the museum would coordinate a project in which people could photograph artworks in cultural institutions to illustrate Wikipedia articles. It started with a request from a group of New York Wikimedians to the Brooklyn Museum.
