We partnered with foster youth, former foster youth, artists, and community advocates to create an exhibition that used art to spark action on issues facing foster youth. This project wove together many different participatory threads. We'd love to see this model evolve and grow. Short story: we learned a lot.

For years, I've been fascinated and a bit perplexed by the Elsewhere Collaborative , a thrift store turned artists' studio/living museum in Greensboro, North Carolina. Over the past seven years, this exploration has been undertaken by a staff of artists and more than 35 creators each year participating in our residency program.

The “we” isn’t always staff; in most cases, our staff work with community partners in a participatory, co-creative model. An artist says: “I’ll explore the world, pull ideas from it, and craft a response.”

A cheerful curly-haired deli owner stands in front of 30 of us and shares a quote he loves: "Artists live in the present and write detailed histories of the future." It was even more useful to learn how participatory writing visions can be. In the Zingerman's model, visioning is for everyone at all levels of the organization.

But the point is that the MAH, like just about every other museum in the known universe, was content to define the museum experience as something removed from the outside world, a rarefied church-like space of refined artistic reflection. Last month, I met an artist who was part of a group that created a renegade podcast tour for the Portland Art Museum. The participatory element employs an accessible speculative question. The participatory element is modeled well by the "official" content. They model the requested visitor contributions.

It's not the extent to which they are participatory. They may employ local artists to help create visitor experiences. Tags: children's museums design business models. I've only visited about 0.01% of the institutions out there and I suspect that the other 99.99% includes some real gems. It creates another forgettable museum.

People who work with non-professionals on participatory projects often talk about finding "neutral" sites for meetings or meeting on their (the non-professionals') territory. Once we realized that virtual exhibits would not translate directly to the real world, we transitioned to a model where the real exhibits were "inspired by" the virtual.

The whole exhibit modeled the potential for someone to respond to your query, and as it grew, the sense that you would be responded to and validated grew as well. The World Beach Project is managed by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London with artist-in-residence Sue Lawty. Many museums do not provide participants with clear terms surrounding their submissions, and for savvy people (especially artists!) In their personal statements, beach artists wrote about profound connections to nature.

When asked why these artistic directors were pursuing co-creative processes, "to make great art!" Respondents also talked about growing as artists through the process and the incredible things they learned from working with non-professionals. When an institution becomes wholly participatory, those distinctions often erode.
