Last week, I had the pleasure of working with a group of Population and Reproductive Health grantees from Pakistan on a peer learning group called “ The Networked NGO ,” based on the ideas in my book, The Networked Nonprofit. The four-day intensive face-to-face training was for senior level staff and their social media staffers.

My role was to deliver components of the Networked NGO curriculum – sessions on network mapping, challenges assumptions about networked ways of working, as well as training on how to use the online collaboration platform for their together moving forward. Needless to say, I learned a lot! Network assessment.

I’m the lead for Zoetica where my role is to deliver training, advise on the curriculum and coaching methods, model transparency, and serve as meta network weaver. Before raising the hopes of any community, one of the first things an NGO should ask itself is: After we leave, what will remain in the community, and is it something they want and can sustain? We think it is both unethical and unfair to train people on the technical side without also giving them the tools to keep the operation going.

The project is training 300 NGOs in Jordan , Lebanon , Tunisia , Morocco , and other Arab countries to become networked ngos and use social media for civil society goals. I’m here at the Dead Sea in Jordan where I delivered the key note for the E-mediat Networking Conference, “New Media for the Networked NGO.” 83% of participants are applying their social media skills to engage local and global communities. 12 training centers have been established.
