Most museums that offer interactive exhibits, media elements, or participatory activities offer them alongside traditional labels and interpretative tools. Over the past year, I've noticed a strange trend in the calls I receive about upcoming participatory museum projects: the majority of them are being planned for teen audiences. Teens are developmentally focused on social identity-building and may feel more compelled to share their voices and express themselves than others than other visitors.

In many cases, these projects are initiated based on some community concern, such as issues around local sources of pollution, invasive species, or unsafe consumer products. I've added a fourth model to this citizen science typology, one may be more appropriate to facilities like museums than to scientific organizations: co-option.

There's a tag applied to many Museum 2.0 Posts under that tag tend to examine non-museum things, from malls to games to ad campaigns , and draw some design lessons for museums from their foreignness. It showcases diverse voices. Participating in this made me wonder: could a museum or library run a project like 3six5? Such a project would connect community members to the institution, promote the idea that history is being made everyday by regular people, and showcase local, contemporary stories.

Jennifer Caleshu, their director of communication, is a museum talker extraordinaire. Both are museum-run forums for visitors to post their own content and opinions.

The majority of TikTokers, they’re so young, they’re so spontaneous, they’re so generous with reactions, with shares, with tagging. And not just museums jumped into that, it was a lot of different organizations. TikTok has a really unique audience. It’s pretty horrifying, some of the things that people found.
