We created a new game version ( Social Media Game ) based on those Drew Mackie and he had developed over the past 10 years. You can find David's training games here.) Next week, I'm bringing the game to Hawaii Social Media Club Workshop and was hoping to mix in some Aloha spirit.

There were people already doing cool stuff, like InSTEDD and some great work around mashups of humanitarian data in Afghanistan, as well as folks discussing lauching cool new social enterprises (but we can't talk about them yet). I did a session on technology that does social good but doesn't make money, and got a dynamic group to show up.

I've been designing game-like experiences with museums for a long time. But this week, I participated in a game design workshop with Ken Eklund that totally changed my perspective. My starting point is interactive exhibit design; Ken's is game design. As they played, we talked openly about how the game was progressing.

You can even hold a card game tournament and sell spots to participate. Think battle of the bands, a concert, a DJ mashup, or a party that people will pay to attend or have a karaoke night where attendees not only pay to participate but can donate to see your staff sing! Have a Vegas Night where people pay to get chips.

I would love to develop more indepth training workshop or webinar on this topic, geared more for nonprofits and participatory campaigns, perhaps incorporating the Creative Commons Open Content Game. While browsing RSS reader today, I noticed someone had favorited my recursive mashup photo that I have on the cover the presentation.
