When talking about active audience engagement with friends in the museum field, I often hear one frustrated question: how can we get adults to participate? Major research studies by the NEA and others demonstrate that adults well into their 60s are highly motivated to participate actively with cultural experiences.

When I worked briefly with the Balboa Park Online Collaborative to conceptualize a mobile phone-based game to connect visitors to the park to its cultural institutions and history, I knew Ken would be the perfect person to make it happen. Barry Hessenius recently wrote a blog post questioning the theory that more art into the school day will increase and bolster future adult audiences for art experiences. The majority of the book is a tour of the conceptualized physical institution, with smaller sections devoted to the political history of the project and the activities (mostly participatory, distributed, and digital) that the team undertook from 2009-2011 to start building their constituency. The early participatory projects are terrific.

I’ve long admired Improv Everywhere , the NYC-based participatory public art group. Steve has a deep, fake “god” voice, which makes him sound both benevolent and like someone you want to please. After the Nicaragua question, Steve says, “Most of you are pretty good at geography.” He’s not your friend, but he likes you.

In this model, rather than trying to answer a set of broad questions, you look at the spectrum of viable conditions and extrapolate useful strategies from those. The question was raised of whether we all belonged at the same table. Of course, there’s a less legal question here, one about authority and control.
