For years, I've been fascinated and a bit perplexed by the Elsewhere Collaborative , a thrift store turned artists' studio/living museum in Greensboro, North Carolina. In 2003, my collaborator Stephanie and I began an excavation, declaring nothing for sale. George will respond to comments on this post and is also reachable here.

Arts Wire, a project of NYFA, was originally intended to be a place for artists from all over the country to meet, exchange ideas, and talk about their work via the Internet.

A large number of the collaborative projects of which I'm aware (in which staff partner with community members to co-develop exhibits or programs) are initiated with teens. Users active in online social environments based on social objects like Flickr (photography), Ravelry (knitting), and Wikipedia (information) often trend older.

Kind of like artists, a lot of passion and drive can create great things, but they aren't necessarily sustainable over time. Just like someone is born with a great skill to be an athlete, a world-class athlete, I think entrepreneurs are born that way.

There are people who pay for membership ($40-$100/month, depending on where you are in the country), and there are others who pay for workshops, which range from straight skills ( learn to soldering ) to artsy/sciencey ( needlepoint circuits ) to dangerously silly ( shrinking coins ). I think about how hesitant I was to become an artist, because I didn't see role models, and even to this day how hard it is for me sometimes to find peers who are women of color, because of how systematically they are pushed out. We put together a week-long curriculum to really help people do just that: find their purpose and then give them the skills. It could be the environment, it could be educational issues, political issues, international, national. You won't see a rat in this environment, but God knows you do see and experience flies.
