The 2009 GreatNonprofits Youth Thrive Awards will recognize the top-rated youth-focused nonprofits. The contest asks clients, donors, volunteers, and board members to write reviews of these nonprofits. Awards will be given out of 9 categories (6 geographic US regions and 3 budget size – small, medium and large).

I’ve had a lot of experience with online contests, both as a participant (winner) and working two reflection papers for the Case Foundation ‘s America’s Giving Challenge. In a summer-long contest by American Farmland Trust, nearly 30,000 Americans voted for their favorite local farmers market, and Williamsburg swept the medium category (31-55 vendors). About the Contest. According to Hoffman, the contest has been a great success and succeeded beyond their original expectations.

At the end of that panel, we all hoped there would be a larger nonprofit presence on the agenda for this 2009. And yes, indeed, in 2009, there were more nonprofit focused panels and happily the trend continued at SXSW 2010. Online contests that award dollars to nonprofit causes are here to stay. They want to connect.
