During those three days of scribbled notes, pun tweets, and laughs, I did fall in love with the US nonprofit community, with NTEN, and with a man who I''d move halfway across the world to marry. I was the only person at my organization, in fact the only one in the country, doing social media strategy for a gay and lesbian health organization.

After Jason Shim won the 2014 NTEN Award in March, I thought I’d have a look to see why Amy Sample Ward and company thought so highly of him. As silly as it sounds, people like to receive a personal invitation. When that request comes from someone they personally know, the invitation is even more effective. A request from an individual opens up the opportunity for them to share a personal story. Provide Participants with Personalization Tools.

Thanks to a scholarship from NTEN, I was given the opportunity to fly to Sydney to attend the ConnectingUp! My mom suffered from polio and has dealt with her disability her whole life, so my personal history with polio made me even more passionate about the cause. And to the folks at ConnectingUp!, Lawrence College.
