I still get fidgety listening to the podcast, but now I see it as an artifact of a supremely conducted participatory project rather the sole product of the process. And they made me appreciate them as superb facilitators as a particular kind of participatory experience: conversation with strangers. They really cared about me.

I always love it when I see a staff show at a museum or a wall at a design firm celebrating the kids who have come in to serve as focus group members (see photo). This creates a dependency where visitors only experience the communal relationship if it is facilitated by staff.

The design is nothing special: a question printed on construction paper with a bunch of post-its and pens for visitors to respond. This is a participatory comment board in a true sense. The institution facilitates the space and tools to allow visitors to provide information to each other.

The artists come from all over (though many are based in the Midwest), and anyone can enter. Before I went, Artprize intrigued but did not fascinate me. The prizes?

I decided to stay a few extra days and facilitate a workshop on the Networked Nonprofit for local NGOs. I also learned more about crowdmap , a hosted version of the Ushahidi code – in other words you don’t have to install it on your own web server. I favor a participatory approach with full room discussion.
