In honor of Gerry Davis, April 2018 My mentor passed away earlier this month. I have had the benefit of numerous mentors over my long career, but Gerry Davis was The Mentor. Gerry was one of the earliest computer software attorneys, and even wrote one of the first books on the subject. Gerry was like a father to me.

Years ago when I started my leadership and management blog, I posted the question “ What’s The First Leadership Book You Would Give To a New Manager ?” That question generated 603 comments and 690 book recommendations. Some people suggested more than one book. Maxwell each have two books in the Top 20. Covey and John C.

I just finished reading Kentaro Toyama’s new book, Geek Heresy, tackling the cult of technology as a cure-all for society’s ills. There’s often more value to me in reading iconoclastic books than feel-good affirmations of popular icons! A mentor is going to have a more powerful impact over somebody than YouTube videos.
