I had an exciting and busy week of teaching public workshops, facilitating informal staff workshops, and meetings at the Embassy mostly on the topic of Networked Nonprofit, digital strategy, and leading on social media. The latter may be due how children are taught in the Finnish educational system.

For example, the Chicago Public Library system created new children’s spaces in their libraries based on extensive visitor research and observed how families and children move through the new spaces and then iterate based on what they find. They are using service design to better serve their community’s changing needs.

Over the years, I have developed and refined one-day or half-day workshops on social media strategy and tactics for nonprofits. Last week, we launched the first session of the " Social Media Lab ," a social media peer group training with a small group of grantees from the Children, Families, Communities Program.

Here in Santa Cruz, my museum has embarked on a major project to redevelop the plaza outside our doors into a vibrant, cultural hub for downtown, and we are trying to make the development process as open and useful as possible. I came out of the workshop with a mixture of joy and unease. Kids frequently suffer from tokenism.

By slowing down and making a piece of art for someone, we provide a personal connection to the issues and to individuals and create opportunities to see our commonalities despite geographic or cultural borders. During these workshops I felt a peace that seemed to resonate around the room. First of all, you can make a postcard!
