There are maker spaces popping up for all kinds of artists, crafters, and independent entrepeneurs who want a shared space to congregate, share ideas, and work on projects. Most hackerspaces have very transparent legal structures and operate on a consensus model. This isn't just a geek thing. The institution IS the members.

I think about how hesitant I was to become an artist, because I didn't see role models, and even to this day how hard it is for me sometimes to find peers who are women of color, because of how systematically they are pushed out. I'm an artist and an institution builder. Everyone is entitled to art in their life.

What we do here in Oakland, and throughout the Bay Area, is we work with inner city companies that not only have a scalable model, but also have a social responsibility aspect built into their business model. Kind of like artists, a lot of passion and drive can create great things, but they aren't necessarily sustainable over time.

It seemed to be a really good and sustainable model, and we raised around $300,000 doing that kind of work. The other thing that Off the Mat, Into the World does is that we create and model our own outreach projects, but on a grander scale. It was so fun. These kids want to learn. Whether or not it's effective, I have no idea.
