The best way I can really push my own participatory practice and thinking is to operate an institution and work with a community I care about over time. The trustees, staff members, volunteers, and supporters are dedicated people who both love the museum and appreciate the seriousness of the challenges it faces. We'll need interns.

Visitor Co-Created Museum Experiences This session was a dream for me, one that brought together instigators of three participatory exhibit projects: MN150 (Kate Roberts), Click! But the overall experience for everyone of uncertainty was challenging to manage. MN150 will have formal summative evaulation, which is wonderful.

I'm working on a personal project (slowly) to open a cafe/bar venue that is also a design incubator for participatory exhibits. My goals are two-fold: to develop a dynamic, creative, social platform for my community and to distribute its successful elements to other civic learning institutions (museums, libraries, community centers).

Small, quirky projects like the public art geocaching exhibition in Bellevue, WA , and inspiring surprises like the Living Library program and book-drop based tagging at the Hague. But enough of these experiences have convinced me that the participatory museum is not a fringe concept. In other words, there's a lot going on.

I’d posted on twitter a while ago about how one of my challenges with ICOM’s definition is that I wasn’t sure how visitor-centered it was. Museums are quality learning spaces, but so are libraries. Museum house things, but so do libraries. The challenge with these debates is that they take us away from big issues.

In April, I gave 13 UW graduate students a simple challenge: make an exhibit that gets strangers to talk to each other. Like the Living Library project , the advice booth was a platform that connected strangers with strangers--not just staff with strangers. Jessica Colaco places books in the iHub Community Library. I favor a participatory approach with full room discussion. I need to find a space like this in Silicon Valley for 2011. In addition to the Networked Nonprofit , I brought copies of books from colleagues that might be of interest to local NGOs.
