Over the past year, I've noticed a strange trend in the calls I receive about upcoming participatory museum projects: the majority of them are being planned for teen audiences. Why are teens over-represented in participatory projects?

For years, I've been fascinated and a bit perplexed by the Elsewhere Collaborative , a thrift store turned artists' studio/living museum in Greensboro, North Carolina. Over the past seven years, this exploration has been undertaken by a staff of artists and more than 35 creators each year participating in our residency program.

Not only does the activity support local artists, it challenges how outsiders and insiders engage with each other and share knowledge in a conference setting. The other two things that happened was that I started working a lot in participatory journalism. I'm a big believer in participatory journalism, or citizen journalism, whatever you want to call it. I was always thinking, how could a freelancer pitch the world? But I also think that it has some limitations.

Artprize invited me to talk about art with artists, families, security guards, friends, people old and young, sophisticated and novice, drunk and sober. The World Beach Project is managed by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London with artist-in-residence Sue Lawty. Many museums do not provide participants with clear terms surrounding their submissions, and for savvy people (especially artists!) In their personal statements, beach artists wrote about profound connections to nature.
