This question is a byproduct of the reality that most participatory projects have poorly articulated value. What's the "use" of visitors' comments? When a participatory activity is designed without a goal in mind, you end up with a bunch of undervalued stuff and nowhere to put it.

In the most extreme cases, I've talked to folks from museums that are government-mandated to provide all content in multiple languages who say they are unable to invite visitors to make comments because they'd have to translate all of them and simply can't dedicate the resources to do so. And now, the research group Forrester provides new insights about different kinds of participatory styles among users of social media sites. Digression: Some people have commented that my hierarchy of social participation suffers this fault by implying that museums should be trying to level up to higher social engagement.

Last week, I gave a talk about participatory museum practice for a group of university students at UCSC. Teenagers are often the target for participatory endeavors, and they definitely have high interest in creative expression, personalizing museum experiences, and using interactive or technological tools as part of their visit.

Today I discovered Cityzenjane's blog and her i_like_to_watch tag/delicious rss feed via a comment to one of my blog posts. At first, I thought it was comment spam promoting a porno site but far from it. Tell me about your experience with tagging. Why do you tag? Tagging is a small part of that.

When I heard the tollbooth story, I started thinking about gifting as a model for participatory experiences in museums. This post discusses participatory gifting in three parts: the why, the what, and finally, the how. You gift the community a book review, I gift an overlapping community a music review. That may be true.
