It's a little living room in a lobby area that invites people to lounge on comfortable chairs, leaf through magazines and books related to art and Santa Cruz history, and generally hang out. For me, the goal is for people to have an enjoyable, educational, cultural, social experience.

I've often argued that art and history museums should adopt this approach and encourage visitors to explore their potential as artists or historians, not just audiences for content. But now I've started to question the value of this message. There are many ridiculous exhibits that prompt you to "be the surgeon!"

When talking about active audience engagement with friends in the museum field, I often hear one frustrated question: how can we get adults to participate? Major research studies by the NEA and others demonstrate that adults well into their 60s are highly motivated to participate actively with cultural experiences.

We recruited folks and designed software that texted them five times a day for thirty days, asking one question, "Rate your mood 1 (low) to 10 (high)." We ran with it and have since generated data about decision-making, cooperation, competition and negotiation for scientists (and also some artists) to play with.
