Recently, a colleague asked me a wonderful question: How did you learn to become a good facilitator and trainer? Conferences are a great opportunity to take workshops and observe the facilitator’s techniques. I also had an opportunity to attend a couple of sessions that used participatory facilitation techniques.

There are different ways to design a participatory workshop. The session kicked off with a Spectragram exercise involving the full group. I learned this technique from Allen Gunn from Aspiration over ten years ago at 2007 Penguin Day. Others have also documented and used the technique or taught others how to do it.

Going beyond content delivery, I also use a lot of participatory and hands-on learning techniques to help students gain a deeper understanding. I’ve spent a lot of time trying to understand how the feng shui of a classroom impacts learning. Circles without tables, just chairs helps promote group discussion.

There are many artistic projects that offer a template for participation, whether a printed play, an orchestral score, or a visual artwork that involves an instructional set (from community murals to Sol LeWitt). One of the things I always focus on in participatory exhibit design is ensuring that everyone has the same tools to work with.
