Relative to other museums, I think we spend less time producing an "onstage" experience and more time collaborating with community organizations behind the scenes to empower them to produce. Our museum is growing, and I'm always weighing different ways to expand our impact. I feel great about this approach.

Some people attack the problem by sleeping less. I've always loved the idea of "space-making" as a strategy for personal care and interpersonal empowerment. This past summer, my museum hosted a retreat for diverse professionals to explore space-making in deep ways. Sometimes, the thought invokes pre-nostalgic fear.

One of my favorite comments on the first post in this series came from Lyndall Linaker, an Australian museum worker, who asked: " Who decides what is relevant? When you say you want to be relevant, that usually means "we want to matter to more people." Or different people. My answer: neither. The market decides what's relevant.

One of the nonprofits that inspires me locally here in Santa Cruz is a youth empowerment and food justice organization called "Food, What!?" FoodWhat's staff and teens have taught me a lot about what it really means to be relevant to people who are often overlooked or ignored. I was going down a bad path with the wrong people.

Name Voyager is a site that allows people to explore names through American history in an interesting way, whereas Nymbler provides an outcome-driven service. The design thinking behind this is that people are output-driven and want to see how their selections form a composite picture. I would use Name Voyager longer.
