She says that the museum made changes in hiring and board recruitment practices, and invited the community in to help reshape the facility into a place that reflected and represented its people and their interests. I can't say that any one experience--working on a collage with other visitors, swinging on a hammock, discovering a participatory display for pocket artifacts in the bathroom--directly contributed to increased attendance and giving. This community was ready for a museum that reflected the unique creative identity of Santa Cruz.

I've seen this line of questioning almost completely disappear in the past two years due to many research studies and reports on the value and rise of participation, but in 2006-7, social media and participatory culture was still seen as nascent (and possibly a passing fad). In 2008, the conversation started shifting to "how" and "what."

I still get fidgety listening to the podcast, but now I see it as an artifact of a supremely conducted participatory project rather the sole product of the process. And they made me appreciate them as superb facilitators as a particular kind of participatory experience: conversation with strangers. They really cared about me.

The neighborhood is a mix of people and communities by design and has a rich social history. They focused on one of the key events in Rotterdam history: the bombing of the city at the beginning of the Second World War. Katendrecht is a part of town that for over 125 years has been a home for migrants and newcomers to the city.

I cut out from the meeting by myself to check out an exhibition called Open House, if These Walls Could Talk at the Minnesota History Center. One of his students reflected: Using the interactive iPad book to test my own reliability in crime scenes and investigations was really powerful. Not that it was sad, but that it was human.

Again, these rules reflect platform control, and when the control is too heavy-handed, users get annoyed and stay away.
