Every once in a while I come across a project I wish I could have included in The Participatory Museum. It wasn't just "here's what kids like at the Wallace Collection"--it was a real exhibition designed by the community it was intended to serve. it's a Secret! , They decided to ask children, and the project was born.

I'm working on a personal project (slowly) to open a cafe/bar venue that is also a design incubator for participatory exhibits. My strategy is: make it work really well, research what works and doesn't, and share the design lessons with the world. Maybe not. My model is the shining star. His is the virus.

I was there for a think tank about the reinstallation along with a handful of designers and academics. But a few people seemed nervous that we were trying to trick or evaluate them. But as Nina notes, they are doing research from this experiment about the role of independence and influence in a participatory experience.

I first learned about this technique from Sam Kaner''s excellent book, Facilitator''s Guide to Participatory Decision-Making. In 2014, it was a rapid-fire research project, documented on a website.

For a long time, I knew I cared deeply about designing from "me to we" --inviting visitors to form social connections through participatory experiences--but I couldn't express a clear reason why. When I wrote about this in 2008, I focused on the question of how to design exhibits to be optimized for "pointiness." But designing an entire museum that functions this way probably isn't your goal.
