Every program, old and new, should be evaluated against the mission (and the business model) for soundness. While most of the voices represented are positive about a "Smithsonian 2.0"

People already know how to leave voice and text messages and don't have to grapple with a comment system to do so. This may improve quality as well as quantity of comments; if visitors can comment directly on individual artifacts, there may be fewer generic "this exhibition was great!" comment rate. contributions.

I also learned that the best money in museums for someone who's starting out is in art modeling. I survived the first half of 2003 financially on art modeling and poetry gigs. I started meeting people through the blog--both those I interviewed and early readers who commented. There is lots of room for new voices online.

People who work with non-professionals on participatory projects often talk about finding "neutral" sites for meetings or meeting on their (the non-professionals') territory. Once we realized that virtual exhibits would not translate directly to the real world, we transitioned to a model where the real exhibits were "inspired by" the virtual.

It's a warning sign when community members make comments like , "it was only boundless encouragement from Avi (Nina's Second Life avatar) that prevented me from giving up more than once." But they are more importantly the face and voice of the institution to everyone online, a floor staff army of one. This is a problem.

I was talking this week with Mark Allen, the founder of Machine Project (an alternative arts space in LA), about different models for community engagement in cultural institutions. At one point, he commented that there's a difference between the "framework" and the "sensibility" for engagement.

I'm still close with some of the very first people to read the blog--strangers whose comments, encouragement, and advice have guided me for more than a decade. You can join the conversation in the blog comments and add your own voice to the debate. It is crucial that LAMs be considered public civic spaces, but Oldenburg's model leaves a lot to be desired. Nina's research keeps finding that the right kind of constraints work to produce a better participatory museum experience.

Several spoke disparagingly of the idea that co-creation is primarily about empowering participants; as the Artistic Director of Dance United, Tara-Jane Herbert, commented, "if you want to save people, then this is not the company for you." When an institution becomes wholly participatory, those distinctions often erode.
