Kiva is a San Francisco based crowd-funding microfinance nonprofit that allows just under a million people to make little micro-loans to poor people around the world. Kiva is a classic nonprofit social enterprise that relies mainly on earned revenues rather than grants or donations. I chatted with my old friend, Bennett Grassano.

Lasica, a social media pioneer who co-founded Ourmedia.org, the first video hosting and sharing site. She is currently a Kiva fellow serving a three-month tour in a rural section of the Philippines. Her upcoming book “The Networked Nonprofit” will provide a social media roadmap for nonprofits.

Donors have multiple options in crowdfunding platforms: Kickstarter, Indiegogo, Kiva, Crowdrise, GiveEffect — and this list is growing fast. Nearly 50% of Boomers’ crowdfunding gifts went to “other” crowdfunding sites – most of which contributed to Kiva (a micro-loan crowdfunding site).
