For awhile now, we at TechSoup (parent organization to the MaintainIT Project ) have been working with our corporate partners to open more donation programs to public libraries. In the past year, software donations from Symantec , NOZA , and others have become available to public libraries for the first time.

We're giving away two refurbished laptops to subscribers of our By the Cup (BTC) newsletter. The program extends the life cycles of commercial-grade IT equipment that comes from corporations and other institutions, and it also provides free end-of-life shipping and responsible recycling when you're done with it.

Basically, it allows one computer to serve several people in a lab or library at very low cost and with minimum maintenance. Burlington Public Library was one of our test installation sites. It is a medium-sized library about 60 miles north of Seattle in northern Washington State. Windows MultiPoint Server.

Gosh, has it been nine years now since I started TechSoup's Refurbished Computer Initiative (RCI) program? We've hit something of a benchmark in this successful program: we've distributed a little over 50,000 refurbished devices through RCI — including laptops, monitors, servers, and tablets. It is a small, rural library that serves 5,000 people in the Skagit Valley in northern Washington State. She became the library tech person by default.
