Giving Days are not a new idea and have been successful in local communities and entire states, like GiveMN which raised $2 million in 24 hours using the Razoo platform. But the idea of doing this through your online social networks has become normalized in the last few years as online social networks have become intertwined with our lives.

They shared a slide (see above) about new models we’ll see that combine both – especially the “not invented yet.” Does everyone in your nonprofit participate in social networks including the board? What are the benefits and challenges? They want to combine both.

But, I’m optimistic – I am seeing good models of this today which can be applied by foundations in their work. Hey – foundations used to be nervous about social networking, too! Use competitions and contests to generate new ideas from new audiences. Use online tools to gather data from across sectors.

In 2008, I designed the Nonprofit and Social Media ROI Poetry Slam and last year was a panel on crowdsourcing that modeled crowdsourcing in the design and delivery. The challenge for every business, organization, and nonprofit or for-profit company is that the world of social media is like the Wild Wild West. Trust me.
