Livestream some 60s music and entertainment. Music can always add a fun touch to any decade-themed event! How about creating a virtual auction event themed around a type of collectible, like sports memorabilia or music memorabilia? The Lake Wales History Museum recently hosted an online auction dedicated to vintage furniture.

So for this last piece, we look at going the other way: making museums more physically comfortable. There was funky music. And on the walls, my friend explained, was art from the museum itself.

Last month, the Christian Science Monitor published an article entitled, "Museums' new mantra: Connect with community." It took me a couple weeks (and various museum blog responses ) to realize what bugs me about this article--it treats "connecting with community" as a marketing ploy, a "mantra" rather than a mission.

From a museum perspective, I think there's a lot to learn from these venues' business models, approach to collecting and exhibiting work, and connection with their audiences. In 2003, writer George Scheer inherited his grandmother's thrift store and decided to turn it into an artists' center and museum.

I got my copy of the fall issue of Museums and Social Issues this week. The theme is "Civic Dialogue," and the journal includes articles on the historical, cultural, media, and museum practice of getting people talking to each other (including one by me about such endeavors on the web). A place many museums are not.

To be eligible for the prize, your exhibit must be on the theme of "Art, Film, Music & Technology." I don't see Second Life as the meat of this project.

On June 4, we opened The Tech Virtual Test Zone , a new 2000 sq ft gallery at The Tech Museum of Innovation featuring exhibits on the theme of art, film, and music that were originally developed in Second Life by a community of creative amateurs. We inspired a community and got real results.

Why discuss gifting on Museum 2.0? One of my greatest interests is the "p articipatory museum," in which there is substantive, unfacilitated visitor-to-visitor interaction. When I heard the tollbooth story, I started thinking about gifting as a model for participatory experiences in museums. No, I'm not angling for a present.

I spent an hour this morning "brand listening" to what the online world says about one of my favorite museums, the Exploratorium.

This year, the American Association of Museums annual conference was in Los Angeles (my hometown). I hosted two sessions, one on design for participation and the other on mission-driven museum technology development. He started with museums as a "place to go"--to see things, consume experiences.
