By a strange and lucky coincidence, I was at the Experience Music Project and Science Fiction Museum (EMPSFM) in Seattle for a two-day workshop. It is apropos that the EMPSFM workshop was focused on how the museum can deepen relationships with teen audiences. Do these teens need EMPSFM to survive? Probably not.

Side Trip is an immersive environment full of interactive experiences that let visitors share their own stories of the 1960s, make their own rock posters, and explore the music and vibe of the time. I saw teens and adults who sat and did this activity for 45 minutes and wasn’t surprised to hear that some people spend over an hour on it.

I watched many entertaining shorts featuring students explaining exhibits to the beat of popular and illegally uploaded music. When I watch the videos teens created at the Exploratorium and post on YouTube, I see the aspects of the exhibits they thought were most important to share with their classmates.

We tried on clothes, listened to new music, and threw pennies in the fountain. It’s ironic, when you think about the great pains that museums and libraries go to to create spaces that are “teen-positive,” that malls attract kids effortlessly with fluorescent lights and lousy music.
