He defined museums as “a lifeline between its community and the wider cultural landscape. A 24/7 resource always top of mind.” It is only enlivened by people, visitors and staff alike.

After listening to this clip a few times, I wondered: what if museums dropped the authoritative voice, the cultural voice, the friendly teacher voice, and adopted a novice voice?

A few things I learned from the presentations and discussion: Dan shared a useful 4-step mental model for the progression of how institutions move towards participatory engagement.

Imagine the drool emitted from marketing folks' mouths if museums were seen as viable places for singles to meet in a friendly, culturally interesting environment.

I didn't grow up staring open-mouthed at natural history dioramas or wandering through art galleries. I didn't have a clue about the other rationales for museums--places of stored knowledge, places to keep stuff, places to colonize minds. There are many parallels between free-choice learning and participatory design.

The ideal of third places, that attracts we cultural heritage types, is a democratic space where civic life is built collaboratively and at a personal level.
