But we've just compiled all our attendance data for the past year at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History (our fiscal year ends on June 30), and several people have written to me asking for the numbers behind our turnaround. design new programs with a focus on history. I promise--after this post, I'll stop writing about this.

Talking about money, openly. I led a session with Eric Siegel and Ellen Rosenthal on museum business models and some of the issues we grapple with in managing money. In particular, we had a great group of 15 talking about participatory history experiences on Sunday. History and science museums. We dance out our bad times.

In a lot of ways, our successful turnaround at the MAH has been driven by both embracing incremental change and opening up clear opportunities for community organizations and individuals to "plug" their cultural brilliance into our space. When I started at the MAH last May, we had absolutely no money. We scrounged for free couches.

She doesn't have a specific idea for a partner event or exhibit, but she feels like we have a lot to offer each other in terms of publicity and a shared focus on enhancing cultural experiences in the community. And she wants to do it now--in the next two weeks. I want to say yes. In fact, I do say yes. Chaos can be stressful.

One of the most powerful books I read while doing research was We are Coming Home: Repatriation and the Restoration of Blackfoot Cultural Confidence ( read it free here , great appreciation to Bob Janes for sharing it with us). By protecting the bundles, museums were protecting important cultural heritage for generations to come.

Community First Program Design At the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History , we've gravitated towards a "community first" program planning model. Committed teens lead the program and use it as a platform to host cultural events and creative projects for hundreds of their peers across the County. No money changed hands.

If you asked me a month ago what the biggest barrier was to American arts organizations adopting practices that support active engagement in the arts by diverse participants, I would have said two: money and legitimacy. Move the money, and the field will move. Turns out it's not that simple. and Irvine may not be on theirs.

We've been friends since we were seven, so we already had a very long collaborative history. Louis is a traditional artist and I was in the journalism field. In a lot of ways, conservatives built their base starting on the real cultural and not necessarily political level. That's what we're trying to do now.
