The most recent Pew Internet Project Internet and technology use studies show how immersed teens and young adults are in the online environment and how tied they are to the mobile and social sides of it. Some 95% of teens ages 12-17 are online, 76% use social networking sites, and 77% have cell phones.

The question came from a diversity consultant while we were discussing how young people today are being brought up on social networks AND some statistics about age and email/social network use. The consultant also pointed out that flickr photo I used seemed to indicate that the percentage are low.

Online social networking was just being born. You had to say something on the blog, or post a photo on Flickr, or organize a Meetup. Technorati (the first blog search engine at that time). In the end analysis, nonprofits and NGOs build communities and are sustained by communities. Social Networking Web 2.0

I brainstormed series of equations or theories that represent best practices that nonprofits are using to implement social media. Social Media and social networks allow for the quantum effects, paired elements at a distance. My own feeling is that social media is not a either/or to email or search engine optimization.
