A few years ago, we had just a handful of pioneering platforms in microphilanthropy. Three months later I had a prototype platform aggregating actions from RSS feeds, with a search element around that content. Around the time of the Nonprofit Technology Network ’s 2008 NTC conference, an even brighter light bulb went on.

He or she has created one of the most innovative, enjoyable mashups out of a cultural icon. What's a mashup? One fun example is overplot , a mashup that takes quotes overheard in New York City ( the data ) and places them on a Google map (the tool), so you can browse the quotations by address.

Between 2006 and 2009, TechSoup hosted open challenges to identify and provide support for innovative projects that harnessed these and other technologies for social good. The Ushahidi platform was created and deployed by this group in about three days. We got to know Ushahidi mere months after the platform launched.

The way I see it, there are many directions that technology is aiding social change work: enabling data sharing, exchange and mapping. You can make friends and call them into action, but those actions and real engagement will link to and live outside of the platform. Use the tool for what it is: a communications platform.

Of course, the bottom line is that this makes it more likely that Google can get their ad platform onto phones. We hope that this will spur development for more social applications and mashups as well as better distribution of these applications worldwide. The SDK will be available later this month.

Ushahidi created and deployed its platform in about three days to be used by ordinary Kenyans, allowing them to report incidents of violence happening around them.
