Last month, the radio show This American Life ran a fascinating episode called " Kid Politics ," which starts with a long segment about the Air Force One Discovery Center immersive experience at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. Could 5th graders handle a truly open simulation? Maybe, maybe not. It would be both exciting and confusing.

Yes, I was that woman on the beach with a library book about urban planning. I''m entrenched in a project to build a creative town square in Santa Cruz connected to my museum. When we lose the public space that facilitates it--active sidewalks and thoroughfares--we lose the simplicity of anonymous collisions. And loved it.

But I couldn''t fully imagine how a museum or an arts center could embody it. Pop up libraries, performance spaces, and seating areas. On a recent trip to the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh, I noted a discussion board in the "Nursery" gallery. People feel compelled to comment on each other's comments, writing things like "ditto" or "Get over it!" with arrows pointing to other comments. This is a participatory comment board in a true sense.

Earlier this year, the New Museum and Creative Time commissioned a traveling piece by artist Jeremy Deller called "It Is What It Is: Conversations About Iraq." I saw It Is What It Is twice at the Hammer Museum. Why would I want to talk about Iraq on a visit to an art museum? Even for me, the barriers were too high.

Facilitated/Unfacilitated Blend When we started this course, I really pushed the students to think about ways to induce unfacilitated interactions among strangers. I love facilitated experiences, but I worry that they aren't scalable to every visitor. It's like following blog comments.
