Note from Beth: There has been a variety of criticism of contests. Nonprofit consultant Hildy Gottlieb has been a vocal skeptic and is deeply philosophically opposed to online contests as a method of change in the social sector. Earlier this month, I sent out a few tweets asking for the counterpoint to Hildy's view.

I’ve had a lot of experience with online contests, both as a participant (winner) and working two reflection papers for the Case Foundation ‘s America’s Giving Challenge. I said that I wished contest designers would take a Hippocratic Oath to do no harm to nonprofits! Designate a cheer leader.

For my 50th birthday, I held a 50th Birthday Card Photo Remix Contest on flickr and donated $50 the winner's favorite charity. Gradon Tripp, Boston Blogger, created a fundraiser to support Jane Doe Inc. If you're a blogger, you can run a comment for a donation contest. And, yes they did ! in honor of his late mother.

Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 at the 92nd Street Y’s Belfer Center for Innovation and Social Impact in New York City. Make sure you’re tailoring your messages to different groups of people by creating multiple contact lists, like a segment of new supporters and a segment of longtime supporters. Create an event on social media.

For organizations, web stats are useful indicators of how many people are being reached by their message, the geographical spread of the visitors and whether or not a specific campaign was successful in driving traffic or creating actions (like donations, or letters, etc.) And, I actually hope that doesn’t change.
