When faced with a severe technical crisis -- think mail server down, fried DB server, website hacked -- it's important to approach the situation methodically and in an organized manner. I've found the analogy of a "house fire" both useful for managers to understand what to do, as well as to explain to others what's needed during a crisis.

The volume of searches for “ infographic ” has already surpassed searches for “ email marketing ” and will very soon be equal to searches for “ direct mail ”. Some are so amazing you HAVE to immediately share them; while others are so bad they make you hit the back button faster than Austin Wierschke can send a text to a friend.

I even boldly predicted the demise of direct mail – although I was wrong about that! I handed over the reigns as CEO to Gene Austin and became Chief Strategy Officer. Just as importantly, we built an environment where people could take risks, change roles, and advance their careers.

Every gift you give away, you don't mail it somewhere. There's one woman who -- I think it was in Austin, Texas -- she collected an entire container load full of things for an orphanage in Haiti, using Freecycle. I wanted to keep stuff out of the landfills. So it's bringing together people in their own communities.
