I acquired my love of my words from my mom, who started teaching me to read when I was three, and who still, at age 84, delights in beating me at word games.

I've been doing volunteer work for a long time, and although I'm not entirely sure that it has improved my leadership, communication and problem-solving skills, it always improves my mood, very often teaches me something and occasionally has led to a new job. I thought it was a cool idea to have a team of women building a house together.

To make ends meet, artists would sometimes team up as a studio — helping each other come up with ideas, chipping in when someone was in danger of missing a deadline, teaching each other tips and tricks. And we are bracing for yet another intense, potentially deadly hurricane season. Water levels are rising. The heat is overwhelming.

But also, when people are in need -- like after Hurricane Katrina, when people relocated to the different cities and stadiums -- local Freecycle members in all these areas were able to go in and work with the Red Cross to get people signed up who had just been relocated to whatever city it was.

I mean, we’re used to hurricanes, tornadoes, you know, fires, wildfires. So you could be teaching that webinar today. And the reason why it’s so important is you can plan on the money being there. Who would have thought we were in the middle still of a pandemic? But pandemic, nobody could have ever thought about it.

It's an amazing act of love really in response to the hurricane and the racial neglect that occurred down on the Gulf. It might be teaching. This last fall we produce a CD called Eye of the Storm which has been an amazing project, just the creativity and the generosity of the artists who participated on this CD still blows my mind.
