And if your ratio is higher than the magic number, it may drive potential donors to other organizations. Cost of living and supplies affect this ratio as well. As Guidestar points out, program ratios aren’t the last word for how successful a nonprofit is. A high number can doom a nonprofit’s hopes to raise money.

In order to understand the incidence and success of formal nonprofit collaborations , The Bridgespan Group and The Lodestar Foundation collaborated in a 2014 research study. According to the Bridgespan study, funders “need to tread cautiously” when recommending partners because they would not want their word to be taken as “dictate.”

Almost half would be a great number, if the gender ratio in the industry were equal. According to studies by the American Association of University Women, women are paid less than men in female-dominated, gender-balanced and male-dominated occupations. In the same study, women contributed their success to outside factors.
