One of the reasons I think the issue of genocide in Darfur, and in other places, hasn't reached the mainstream consciousness, is that it is hard to find actions that make concerned citizens feel like they are having an impact. The genocide prevention movement hasn't found its equivalent of carbon offsets, hybrid cars and CFL light bulbs.

Some of the programs that we have currently running are the Sudan Divestment Task Force , which is leading up the campaign to divest state pensions from companies doing business in Sudan on a recently passed Federal legislation to ban future state contracts. His campaign was successful. It is cool to see that happening.

We publish their stories, and from that experience, a big impact was that a lot of the women got their stories picked up. The most powerful impact we found was actually in the women's leadership and influence locally.

I just came from a meeting where I was told that the women we are servicing in Southern Sudan are earning double the per capita income in that country. We work in countries like Congo, Rwanda, Sudan, Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Kosovo, among others. The impact of that is so magnificent. That's the story of Women for Women.

In Tanzania, only something like 3.5%; in Sudan, it's only about 1.5%, and even in India, which we think of as being more developed, it's only about 10% of the people who actually have a job in the formal private sector. But, in Africa, where we work, there are very, very few jobs in the formal private sector.
