I was hired to work for Ford Foundation in 1991 as a program officer in Brazil, when Frank was still President. On that same trip Frank and Susan took to Brazil, we had organized a series of events and workshops so that they could meet grantees and understand the challenging transition Brazil was undergoing from dictatorship to democracy.

After two years of attending Harambee virtually, I was excited to finally join in person, alongside more than 800 fellow attendees. Panelists from Brazil, Kenya, and Jamaica discussed the importance of empowering communities in the African diaspora.

She got me started thinking along this line at a networks meeting where she was encouraging the branding of issues, instead of specific organizations. Its fun to look at the petition and see people signed up from Djibouti to Brazil There is a cell phone component to the campaign that has caused it to really take off in South Africa.
