Have you ever thought about starting a green cafe? Well, Chris Waters of the Nomad Cafe in Oakland not only thought about it, he made it happen. The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights is a civil rights and restorative justice organization for prisoners and for Oakland young adults. They also carry on the work of visionary founder and board member, Van Jones, especially in the area of developing green jobs training programs for low-income youth.

Last Thursday I went to hear Majora Carter from Sustainable South Bronx , Paul Hawken , author of Natural Capitalism and The Ecology of Commerce , Van Jones from the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights , Geralina Fortier from People's Grocery , and Bruce Cox of the Alliance for West Oakland Development speak at the first Solutions Salon.

She is also co-host of the radio show, The Queens of Green on Green 960 , which you can also be downloaded as a podcast. City Slickers Farm is taking over a park, with the support of the city of Oakland. They're going to be growing some food in one of the downtown West Oakland parks, which is pretty exciting.

Reem Rahim is the Co-founder and Vice President of Marketing of the Oakland-based green business Numi Tea. My brother and I started Numi about seven years ago, from here in Oakland, California, and we started in my small apartment up the street, near Piedmont Avenue. Britt: Oakland needs more businesses like Numi.

The three Bay Area municipalities, along with Oakland and San Francisco (who haven't placed their orders yet) have all signed-on to be part of Plug-In Bay Area, an initiative to put more plug-in hybrid vehicles on the road. They need to put the money into making the battery technology available, but they are claiming that they can't do that.
