Another important factor in this debate is that the Egyptian government shut down the internet. There have also been reports of the government cutting off mobile carriers.

People have been silenced throughout time by media outlets, governments and authority figures who strive to keep minorities and protestors at bay. Social media may be changing that across the globe. Women in Iran and protestors on Wall Street think so. But she did have social media outlets like Twitter and YouTube.
